Jake Ellenberger is a fighter on the rise, and he knows it.
“The Juggernaut” found himself squarely in the title picture after putting together a six-fight winning streak, but his hopes were derailed after being knocked out by Martin Kampmann last June. With a handy decision over Jay Hieron and now a big knockout of Nate Marquardt, he is storming back up the rankings.
His next target? Who knows? We know who he would like it to be, though:
I would run through Johnny Bumdrix faster than a pool shark late for a train @fueltv— Jake Ellenberger (@EllenbergerMMA) March 17, 2013
“Johnny Bumdrix,” I think it's safe to assume, translates to Johny Hendricks, who put on UFC 158's Fight of the Night. Hendricks was already in line for a title shot after knocking out Jon Fitch, beating Josh Koscheck and then decapitating Martin Kampmann. He was officially declared the top contender yet again on the Fuel TV UFC 158 post-fight show after earning a unanimous decision victory over Carlos Condit.
While Ellenberger is a downright electrifying fighter who has a great future ahead of him, it is incredibly unlikely this fight comes to fruition. It seems impossible at this point that Hendricks doesn't get his title shot.
Granted, Hendricks has been in this place before. It seemed like a fight with GSP was an eventuality after he beat Martin Kampmann. That said...come on. He has to be in line for a title fight at this point, right?
Luckily for Ellenberger, there are plenty of fights available, including a rematch with Carlos Condit, a fight with Strikeforce welterweight champion Tarec Saffiedine or a bout with Rory MacDonald.
Keep an eye out on Bleacher Report for more news on both fighters.
