UNC vs. Maryland: Live Score and Analysis for ACC Tournament 2013
The North Carolina Tar Heels held off the Maryland Terrapins' many advances in today's second ACC tournament semifinal contest to win and advance to the finals.
North Carolina led by as many as 13 points in this game and had a double-digit lead in the second half, but Maryland had a chance to tie it on the last possession.
Unfortunately, Logan Aronhalt heaved up a desperation shot with 10 seconds left that was a horrible air ball, and North Carolina held the ball until the final buzzer sounded.
UNC will advance to play No. 9 Miami in the finals of the ACC tournament, whereas Maryland's future is now uncertain.
Even after its win over Duke in the quarterfinals, Maryland is on the outside looking in when it comes to the NCAA tournament, finding itself in Joe Lunardi's Next Four Out. Failing to beat UNC might have been the final nail in the coffin, and the Terps will likely play in the NIT as a No. 1 seed.
Final Score: North Carolina 79, Maryland 76
Here are a few notable stats from today's game:
|Field Goal %||44.3||41.0|
|Three Point %||33.3||38.1|
|Free Throw %||69.2||69.2|
|Leading Scorer||Dexter Strickland/Reggie Bullock - 15||Alex Len - 20|
Logan Aronhalt might lead the Terps in three-point shooting percentage, but his errant shot at the end of the game was terribly executed, and Maryland lost because of it. Now the Terps will probably play in the NIT.
Final Score: North Carolina 79, Maryland 76
Horrible execution by Maryland, and UNC hangs on to win.
Maryland Timeout. North Carolina 79, Maryland 76 (10.9 left in the second half)
You have to expect Maryland to go to Nick Faust here.
We could see UNC foul, but after Richmond blew its game with that strategy a few days ago I highly doubt it.
North Carolina 78, Maryland 76 (16.0 left in the second half)
Maryland isn't a great three-point shooting team, ranking No. 206 in the country. However, Nick Faust is 5-of-9 from behind the arc today.
Two more free throws could ice this game.
North Carolina 77, Maryland 72 (33.1 left in the second half)
Wells can't afford to miss either of these. Maryland is going to need a bit of Madness to win this game after Paige steps up on cue.
North Carolina 75, Maryland 72 (1:07 left in the second half)
Marcus Paige might look like a little boy when he's around James Michael McAdoo and Alex Len, but he's been a vocal leader all game, and he has a big game of his own.
Maryland Timeout. North Carolina 75, Maryland 72 (1:07 left in the second half)
Back and forth we go. Where the score stops, nobody knows!
TV Timeout. North Carolina 71, Maryland 68 (3:23 left in the second half)
Stupid turnover by UNC will give Maryland the momentum and the ball. UMD has a chance to tie the game on this possession, and you can bet that this game will come down to the final minute.
Maryland Timeout. North Carolina 71, Maryland 66 (4:09 left in the second half)
Close game with about four minutes left. Classic ACC action.
Timeout. North Carolina 71, Maryland 64 (5:25 left in the second half)
North Carolina might have had the lead for most of the game, but Maryland just refuses to go away. We could have an incredible five-and-a-half minutes coming up.
TV Timeout. North Carolina 66, Maryland 58 (7:40 left in the second half)
Maryland goes on a run, steals the momentum, and James Michael McAdoo gets his fourth foul. That was a huge three-and-a-half minute stretch. Unfortunately for the Terps, UNC knocks down a HUGE three to extend the lead to eight.
North Carolina 59, Maryland 55 (9:03 left in the second half)
Maryland is riding an 10-1 run, and it's helped bring the team back into the game, and potentially an NCAA tournament bid.
North Carolina 58, Maryland 49 (10:06 left in the second half)
Dez Wells needs to get going ASAP. He has the potential to lead a big run, and that three proved that.
Terps just look too tired, nothing UNC is doing impresses me, Miami is going to blow them out of the building.— Weis Karzai (@WeisKarzai) March 16, 2013
TV Timeout. North Carolina 56, Maryland 45 (11:59 left in the second half)
Maryland has to make a long run soon, but the Terps just don't have any energy. Dangerous combination for them.
North Carolina 56, Maryland 43 (12:33 left in the second half)
Maryland is showing just how tiring three games in three days can be. Not the time for the team to collapse, with its season essentially being on the line.
North Carolina 52, Maryland 40 (14:06 left in the second half)
P.J. Hairston hits two of three free throws to open up another 12-point lead. Maryland needs to make a quick run soon.
North Carolina 47, Maryland 38 (15:18 left in the second half)
Great comment from Guillermo Iraola, discussing Alex Len's impact and how UMD should utilize his four-inch size advantage:
maryland needs to give len the ball, he is their best player...unc can't defend him..and if they double him someone will be open for 3..Len has talent..that reverse slam was amazing
TV Timeout. North Carolina 47, Maryland 38 (15:58 left in the second half)
Those first four minutes were won by the Tar Heels. A quick 10-3 run for UNC gave the school a 12-point lead, but Maryland's late three-point play cut it to nine.
