Southampton 3 (Schneiderlin, Lambert, Rodriguez)
Liverpool 1 (Coutinho)
MOTM: Jay Rodriguez
The ref calls time and Southampton have gained themselves three almighty points as they bid to beat the drop. It is arguably their best performance under new boss Pochettino, and probably Liverpool's worst league performance under their own boss Brendan Rodgers.
Despite a couple of disallowed goals and a fair few assistant's flags going against them at key moments during attacks, Liverpool were, by and large, simply awful.
Southampton took an early lead when Schneiderlin tapped home from close range and a deflected Lambert free kick doubled their advantage. Coutinho pulled one back for Liverpool just before half time, but they failed to build on that after the break and never really looked like getting back into the match.
A late, driving run and finish from Rodriguez sealed the win which will lift Southampton up into 15th place in the Premier League.
Southampton 3 Liverpool 1
90+3'—Final seconds of the game and Southampton have another free kick after Suarez was called offside. That should be it.
90+2'—Jack Cork attempts a fizzing shot from 30 yards, but it's straight at Jones.
90+1'—Suarez is booked for hounding the goalkeeper as Boruc tries to kick the ball out of his area with the ball in his hands.
90'—Golden chance missed. Johnson drifts beyond Shaw on the right flank and chips a cross to the back post; Jose Enrique runs onto it unmarked and just has to hit the target—but tamely knocks the ball wide from three yards out.
3 minutes of added time to be played
89'—It's been amateur hour-and-a-half at the back today for Liverpool. Skrtel and Agger get in each other's way and almost conspire to hand Southampton a fourth, before the Slovakian boots it clear. Jamie Carragher missed again today?
87'—Liverpool suddenly showing a bit of fight and quickness about their play. It's been rather absent for the last 85 minutes, though.
Scrub that, Villa have just gone 3-2 up.
86'—Southampton just a few minutes away from a huge boost to their survival hopes. They'll be almost as pleased by the news that QPR and Aston Villa are currently drawing.
Southampton sub: Lallana off, Guly do Prado on.
83'—The voices and songs are ringing out around St. Mary's again now, after a nervy first half hour or so in this half.
Liverpool sub: Sturridge off, Jordan Henderson on.
Game over, surely. Southampton take a 3-1 lead and it is more abject defending from Liverpool, who allow the forward to run a full 40 yards through the centre of the pitch with the ball at his feet without being challenged before tucking the ball away at the second attempt, after Jones had parried his initial shot.
Southampton 3 Liverpool 1
Jay Rodriguez, 79 mins
77'—The riposte at the other end for Southampton sees Lambert freed inside the area and it takes a good strong hand from Jones to beat the ball away from goal, and a backtracking Skrtel to clear the danger from inside the six yard box.
76'—With the ball bouncing and bobbling around the box, Gerrard gets on the end of it to strike a fierce shot at goal that Boruc does well to get down low and save.
74'—Southampton attack, then Liverpool counter. Neither do so with any real conviction or numbers, and defence wins out by weight of players on both occasions.
72'—Now Liverpool exerting a bit of extended pressure. Coutinho runs at the defence and when his pass is blocked, Jose Enrique tries to find Suarez in the area. Shaw defends well to concede a corner.
71'—The Reds are awarded a free kick for a high boot challenge on Downing. Gerrard will deliver this ball into the area...and Boruc claims convincingly.
70'—Liverpool unable to force any sort of chances at all on goal in this half. They've got 20 minutes left to get back another goal at least. Surely changes must be on the way?
68'—Johnson embarks on a surging run from deep and plays in Suarez, who sees his shot blocked behind.
66'—Great play by Southampton again. Clyne and Lallana exchange passes down the right channel and the full-back fires a low cross over which evades Skrtel, but Johnson clears behind for a corner.
64'—He shoots, it bounces...and Boruc holds it safely and securely against his chest.
