Less than a week ago, I noted that former TNA World champion Bobby Roode's contract had expired, and now it appears that TNA has let another contract lapse.
Except this time, it happens to belong to one of its marquee names and most popular stars.
According to PWInsider.com: "Rob Van Dam is not booked for the Impact taping tonight [Thursday] in Chicago. There's a good reason for that. His TNA deal expired last week. The two sides are talking but right now, he is a free agent."
Keep in mind, RVD tends to live by his own set of rules, so his TNA return could truly be up in the air. Unlike Roode, "The Whole F'n Show" has done just about all there is to do in this business. So, if he wants to take a break from mainstream wrestling, it wouldn't hurt his brand in the least.
In fact, it would probably add more intrigue and make fans appreciate his return even more.
The last time we saw RVD on TNA TV was a little over a week ago when he unceremoniously lost the X-Division title to Kenny King.
Overall, this isn't the first time that RVD dropped a TNA title and went on hiatus. In 2010, RVD won the TNA World title and took a pre-approved break in the midst of his title run.
In the end, we will have to wait and see what happens here, as things could clearly go either way. Now remember, even if he decides to remain a free agent, there is no chance of him returning to the WWE prior to WrestleMania.
Because most wrestling contracts have a 90-day no-compete clause, and with 'Mania less than 30 days away, there is zero chance of that happening.
