College lacrosse on a Wednesday night is a treat for any fan. Having the matchup be between Duke and UNC makes things even sweeter.
Duke, known for early-season woes and later success, stayed true to form last night as they took down the North Carolina Tar Heels by a score of 11-8. Duke was 2-4 headed into last weekend, but have since reeled off wins against No. 2 Loyola and No. 6 UNC in a span of four days.
Duke features a high-powered offense lead by Jordan Wolf, who may be the fastest attackman in the sport today. Wolf scored three goals and had an assist in the victory, while Jake Tripucka added two assists of his own.
UNC has given up a lot of goals this season, winning games by relying on their offense to outscore the opponent. The Tar Heel defense could not keep up with Duke's tempo, with goalie Kieran Burke only saving 42 percent of the shots he saw on cage.
In a back-and-forth battle that was closer than the score, Duke always seemed to have an answer for a UNC scoring run, relying on Wolf and company to fight back late in the game. UNC did show its offensive power, however, as Marcus Holman went for two goals and two assists on the day. Joey Sankey also added two goals, continuing his hot start in 2013.
Duke has dominated the rivalry in recent years, and looks to make it to yet another Final Four weekend this year. UNC has had some of the most talented and deep rosters in recent years, but have yet to get over the hump and make it to Memorial Day Weekend during head coach Joe Breschi's time at the helm.
Carolina's next test will come against Dartmouth on March 18, an opportunity to sharpen its defensive unit before continuing its grueling ACC schedule.
Duke will look to continue its hot streak Saturday as the Blue Devils host the Towson Tigers.
Duke and UNC will not meet again in the regular season, but count on seeing these two teams face off in the ACC tournament later on down the road.
