As I looked over the fourth race today at Gulfstream in the Daily Racing Form, I noticed that the two heavy favorites were both talented and pace setters.
Boy of Summer is a nice three-year-old colt that is coming off a nice win on February 21, when he won by almost two lengths over the turf at Gulfstream. Jose Lezcano keeps the mount for this Rodolfo Garcia trained horse.
Smash and Grab is also a talented three-year-old, who should like the cutback in distance from his previous race on turf, a second-place finish on January 13, 2013. I love the work of 47 flat for this horse on February 26 at Pimlico.
Aside from the two favorites, other horses such as Road Agent and Midnight Aria should be pushing the early fractions, as they fight for the lead. With all the early speed, the race sets us beautifully for a long-shot closer.
Backseat Memories is clearly worth betting today, especially since the Daily Racing Form has the three-year-old colt at 10-1. In his last start, you can ignore the entire race, as he ran poorly over the main track at Gulfstream.
In his last start over the turf at Gulfstream, Backseat Memories won by over two lengths in 1:28.2 for seven-and-a-half furlongs. Considering this race is eight furlongs, this horse should absolutely love the added distance.
Expect a hot pace early and Backseat Memories to be closing fast. I won't be shocked if this race is run in 1:35 flat.
