Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney scored early on for Manchester United, before a stirring Chelsea comeback saw Eden Hazard and Ramires set up a lively final twenty minutes.
Both clubs will enter the draw for the semifinal of the FA Cup, but only one can progress when they meet again at Stamford Bridge in the imminent replay.
