Mexico: Liga MX Weekend Roundup

0 of 12

Another week on the books for Liga MX and Tigres is still undefeated.

The ninth match day showed us that three teams are serious contenders for the Liguilla and some others need to get their act together if they want to secure a spot in the playoffs.

UANL has been unstoppable so far. Ricardo Ferretti has done a fantastic job and the squad is more attuned than ever.

America and Atlas trail Tigres closely. Both teams had great results on home soil and have shown great football this season.

Cruz Azul, Leon and Toluca are lost and out of tune. The trio need to do something quick or they can kiss their chances to qualify for the playoffs goodbye.

As every week, join me and find out the results of every game, the best goal, the upcoming matches and more!

Jaguares vs Santos

1 of 12

    Santos Laguna defeated Jaguares easily.

The local team could not stop Herculez Gomez and Oribe Peralta.

Gomez scored twice, proving his technique and great shape, and assisted El Cepillo for the second team goal.

Darwin Quintero distributed the ball in style and took advantage of Chiapas' weak defense.

Santos has improved throughout the tournament and is becoming a very dangerous team with a well-organized attacking zone.

Jaguares, however, is far from being the club it was in 2004 and 2005.

    Result: Santos 1-3

Queretaro vs Monterrey

2 of 12

Against all odds, Queretaro managed to secure three points in front of Monterrey.

Wilberto Cosme scored early in the match due to a mistake from centre-back Hiram Mier.

Rayados tried hard to level the game but Aldo de Nigris and Humberto Suazo were not at their best; the latter sent one shot to the crossbar.

Diego de la Torre had a great match. He managed to keep the ball and create plays from the right band of the pitch, which put Monterrey's defense in distress.

This is the fourth defeat in the last five appearances for Rayados, something very uncharacteristic for a star-studded club managed by Víctor Manuel Vucetich.

For the local team, this victory means that there is hope to stay in the first division as long as they keep winning on home soil.

    Result: Queretaro 1-0

America vs Cruz Azul

3 of 12

America shook off last week's defeat against Santos and trashed Cruz Azul.

It seemed as if La Maquina was not even on the pitch. The Aguilas took advantage of playing home and they proved that they want to be in the Liguilla.

Christian Benítez scored a hat trick easily. Cruz Azul's defense faltered constantly and the club was lucky enough to have Jose de Jesus Corona on the goal or the result would have been worse.

Raul Jimenez also had a brilliant match. He speed and strength were instrumental in giving America the depth needed to unbalanced the rival.

Cruz Azul is in need of a victory. The club has not won since January and it has not grabbed a single point in the last three appearances.

    Result: America 3-0

Pachuca vs San Luis

4 of 12

Pachuca went back to winning ways against San Luis. The Tuzos controlled the game from the beginning.

It is true that the Reales are not going through a good moment, but Pachuca has found great balance between the midfielders and the strikers.

Daniel Luduena has been a great addition to this team. He is the kind of footballer who not only creates plays but also finishes them.

Angel Reyna keeps getting better and giving all he has. The Mexico international scored the winner at the 70th minute.

San Luis needs to make adjustments as soon as possible. Although the Liguilla seems impossible to achieve, the team needs to just focus on winning.

It is the only squad that has not secured a victory yet.

    Result: Pachuca 2-1

UANL vs Morelia

5 of 12

Is there any team capable of stopping Tigres?

UANL is the only undefeated team of Clausura 2013 and it seems like no team will change that any time soon.

Last weekend Morelia had its shot but couldn't pull off a victory. And if it were not for Carlos Ochoa Monarcas they would have lost instead of getting a draw.

Lucas Lobos gave Tigres the advantage at the 27th minute with an overwhelming free kick. The club kept the scales tipped in its favor until the injury time when Ochoa tied the game.

Nevertheless, Ricardo Ferretti's club is the best offense and the second-best defense of the tournament, and a serious contender for the title.

Morelia has still shown clear improvement since Carlos Bustos took over, especially in the backbone.

    Result: 1-1 draw

Leon vs Puebla

6 of 12

Does anyone recognize Leon? It is definitely not the club we saw in the last tournament.

Puebla visited Nou Camp in hope to grab its first victory since the defeat to Monterrey and the draw to Guadalajara.

La Franja accomplished the feat as soon as the second half was starting. Matias Alustiza stole a ball from the defense and passed it to Diego de Buen, who sent his shot to the right post at the 52th minute.

The Panzas Verdes have only scored eight times, making them the worse offense of the tournament.

Puebla is currently inside the qualification zone but has got to improve—especially on the center of the pitch. The club loses the ball there constantly and will need to remedy that in order to move forward.

    Result: Puebla 0-1

Atlas vs Tijuana

7 of 12

Look out Liga MX teams because Atlas is here to stay!

The team that had few aspirations at the beginning of the season, and was more worried about staying in the first division, is now one of the toughest teams of the tournament.

The Zorros traveled to Tijuana to face Xolos. The Estadio Caliente has always characterized for being a tough ground but it did not affect Atlas this time.

Omar Bravo yet again led Atlas to the victory. The striker scored his fourth Clausura 2013 goal at the third minute, which was enough to defeat the home side.

For the first time this season, Tijuana has lost its last two away games and is now tied with Pachuca at 16 points.

    Result: Atlas 1-0

UNAM vs Guadalajara

8 of 12

Two of the most respected teams in Mexico faced each other in what promised to be a very interesting game.

However, the match was not as exciting as expected.

It was clear that neither team is at its best when the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Martin Bravo appeared in the 27th minute and sent the ball to the back of the net with fine touch. It was a terrible mistake from the defense and the Pumas striker did not forgive.

Miguel Sabah was having a good day on the pitch and he overcame Dario Veron, in yet another defensive error, to give Chivas the equalizer.

UNAM scored again just as the first half was ending but the linesman canceled the goal.

For the record, there was no offside.

The second half turned out to be far from interesting as neither of the clubs played to the best of their abilities.

    Result: 1-1 draw

Atlante vs Toluca

9 of 12

Toluca secured its third win of the tournament with a goal from Luis Carlos Tejada.

Atlante was never a threat to the Diablos Rojos, who set the pace of the game from the beginning. This also means that Toluca has not lost since February 10 when it faced Tigres.

The story is different for the Potros.

The club sits 15th in the general table after two wins, one draw and six defeats. Four of those losses came in away games. It is on home soil where the squad has grabbed its only seven points of the tournament.

    Result: Toluca 0-1

Best Goal

10 of 12

Angel Reyna managed to feint twice before putting his long-distance shot in the top right corner. It was by far the best goal of the match day.
