Miracle Goal Leads Boston University to Fifth National Title

Before we begin, let me clarify something. Yes the overtime goal was a fluke, but the Terriers are no less deserving of the title.

The perennial favorites of the tournament, Boston University, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead that had them in high spirits for a title. That soon changed as Miami of Ohio scored three straight goals in the next two periods.

Entering the final minute of the game, BU trailed 3-1 and appeared to not have any hope for a comeback. With 59.5 seconds left in the game, BU forward Zach Cohen fired a puck into the net to make it 3-2.

Even after that goal, the Terriers needed a miracle to tie it. Forty-two seconds after the second goal, they got their miracle. A rebound off a point shot felt right onto the stick of Nick Bonino and he fired it just over the goal side of the Miami OH goaltender to send the game into overtime.

Both goaltenders made huge saves in OT until finally a BU defensemen fired the puck from the point as the goaltender was being screened and the puck dropped in, securing the Terriers' incredible, dramatic victory.

But it is how the puck went in that will live in college sports history. As defensemen Colby Cohen was winding up for the shot, a Miami defensemen slid down to block the attempt. The shot hit the Redhawk defender and arched into the net to give BU the final, winning goal of this years' tournament.
