With the disappointment of the 2012 USC Trojans football season in the rear-view mirror, fans of the program are looking to pass the idle months while waiting for retribution in 2013.
One way of doing that is to monitor the progress former Trojans who finishes their eligibility (or left after their junior year) and are seeking fame and glory at the next level.
The first step on that road began in Indianapolis, where the NFL just completed its four-day combine to evaluate prospective pros.
Six Trojans participated in the process and the reviews are mixed at best.
This slideshow will look at how quarterback Matt Barkley, center Khaled Holmes, receiver Robert Woods, cornerback Nickell Robey and safeties T.J. McDonald and Jawanza Starling did under the scruitiny of NFL scouts.
Some did well, some not so much, and others couldn't even survive the workout.
Now let's find out who did what.
Despite the fact Matt Barkley could not participate physically at the combine due to his rehabbing shoulder, he still showed up. In keeping with the dynamic personality he is, Barkley wowed the NFL clubs with his football acumen and sterling character.
And there was one other benefit for Barkley as well, when he was measured at 6'2-1/2" easing concerns that he was shorter than the 6'2" as he was advertised.
The effort to travel to Indianapolis wasn't wasted, and you can be sure the NFL will be well represented when Barkley throws at USC's pro day.
One of the best college centers in the nation, Khaled Holmes has been nothing but snakebitten in the off season.
After missing the Senior Bowl due to injury, Holmes arrived at the combine prepared to wow the NFL, but alas, it was not to be.
On Saturday, Holmes injured his pectoral muscle during the weight-lifting portion of the workout and was forced to withdraw from the rest of the drills.
Before he injured himself, Holmes had produced 13 reps of bench presses, but those results do not reflect Holmes' abilities. He will try to reassert himself at USC's pro day in March.
While Robert Woods' on-field production should make him one of the first receivers off of the board in this year's draft, his measurables at the combine may dictate otherwise.
Woods, a record-setting receiver at USC, was pretty ordinary in Indianapolis and failed to distinguish himself physically in front of the pro evaluators.
Like all of the Trojans, Woods will have an opportunity to impress the scouts at the Trojans' pro day, but it remains to be seen if that is the direction he will go.
40-yard dash: 4.51 seconds (slightly better than "middle of the pack")
Bench Press: 14 (again, slightly better than the "middle of the pack")
High Jump: 33.5" (average at best)
Broad Jump: 117" (slightly below average)
3 Cone Drill: 7.15 seconds (slightly below average)
20-yard Shuttle: 4.47 seconds (well below average)
One of three Trojan defensive backs at the combine, safety T.J. McDonald did well for most of the workout, but only offered average times in the 40-yard dash.
McDonald will have an opportunity—as will all Trojans profiled here—to improve that 40 time at USC's pro day. If he does, he might find himself as a first-day pick.
40-yard dash: 4.59 sec. (slightly better than average for those at the combine)
Bench press: 19 reps. (above average)
Vertical jump: 40" (one of the best at the combine)
Broad jump: 131" (one of the best at the combine)
Three cone drill: 6.89 sec. (slightly better than average)
20-yard shuttle: 4.20 sec. (slightly below average)
Many questioned Nickell Robey's decision to forgo his senior season with the Trojans to enter the NFL draft.
Vertically challenged (5'8"), Robey would really need to impress at the combine to hear his name called early in the draft. Unfortunately for him, that didn't happen on Tuesday.
Though he didn't do anything poorly, Robey's workout was pedestrian for the most part and likely means he will have to catch on as a free agent at the next level.
40-yard dash: 4.53 sec. (below average)
Bench press: 10 reps. (below average)
Vertical jump: 37.5" (above average)
Broad jump: 127.0" (above average)
3 cone drill: 6.74 sec. (slightly above average)
20-yard shuttle: 4.09" (slightly above average)
Though not as celebrated as fellow safety T.J. McDonald, Jawanza Starling was a steady, if not spectacular, performer for the men of Troy.
Unfortunately for Starling, the NFL is looking for something beyond "steady" and his workout at the combine did nothing to dispel the notion that he is likely only going to be a marginal player in the NFL.
Like Nickell Robey, Starling did some things well but did not stand out, which means he too will probably need to catch on with a pro team as a free agent.
