The arrest of Jack Swagger has left his status for WrestleMania 29 very much up in the air. If the WWE does decide to go in a different direction due to Swagger's arrest, then a title shot push for Brock Lesnar would be a wise move.
Swagger was arrested for DUI and marijuana possession recently (per TMZ.com), and now the WWE may be mulling a change of plans for his WWE World Heavyweight Championship match with titleholder Alberto Del Rio.
According to The Wrestling Observer (per WrestlingInc.com), Swagger might be removed from his WrestleMania match:
The Wrestling Observer reports that WWE sources note that Jack Swagger was scheduled to win the World Heavyweight Title from Alberto Del Rio at WrestleMania 29. No word yet on what his arrest means for booking plans but WWE creative was working late on Wednesday night to come up with ideas, which doesn't sound good for Swagger and Zeb Colter.
The reasons for such a late move by the company are obvious. The WWE is now attempting to appeal to younger fans, and an idiotic move like that of Swagger's alleged behavior simply cannot be tolerated. Thus, he must be made an example of.
This is no doubt a blow to the stability of the card, but in all actuality, was anyone really that excited for this match? Del Rio can often be viewed as a boring character, while Swagger isn't exactly a major star when compared to some of the other top superstars in the company.
So, what's the next best thing for the WWE as the biggest event of the year approaches?
The Next Big Thing, of course.
Lesnar will be ready to go for WrestleMania, and right now it seems he will take on Triple H in April. However, that's a match we've seen before as it occurred at SummerSlam last year, so it is still fresh in the minds of WWE fans.
Not to mention, it would be another repeat performance on this year's card, which is something fans are not happy about already thanks to another John Cena-Rock matchup.
What better way to spice up a title match at Mania than to have Lesnar take on Del Rio for the belt?
The company could go in several other directions. It could pit one of the losers from the Elimination Chamber match to face the World Heavyweight champ, or maybe Dolph Ziggler could cash in his Money in the Bank because he was so close to doing it on Monday Night Raw.
I would say that the Ziggler-Del Rio match is the most realistic scenario because the WWE was clearly going for a matchup between two of its younger competitors to begin with.
While those are solid options that are more realistic than a Lesnar-Del Rio showdown, none of the wrestlers that have been mentioned can bring the buzz like Lesnar can. The fact of the matter is that Lesnar is still a huge name and has an extremely loyal following.
A match that most people would yawn through could become one of the most talked about if Lesnar is given a title shot.
A match between Lesnar and Del Rio could end up being a huge push for Del Rio with a victory, or the company could just end up having Lesnar become the champion and take full advantage of his popularity.
If this match were to take place, that would likely leave Triple H without an opponent for WrestleMania. Hopefully the Undertaker can make his way back in time for Mania and replace Lesnar as Triple H's opponent, but that's wishful thinking at this point.
If the WWE wants to create some excitement and be a bit more unpredictable going into WrestleMania 29, inserting Lesnar into the World Heavyweight title match would be the best way to do that.
