Though I am over a thousand miles away, I too mourn the untimely passing of a young talented prospect. Just past midnight on April 9th, 2009, Nick Adenhart's life was taken from him by a drunk driver who was driving on a suspended license.
The entire world of baseball is saddened by the loss. At only 22 years old, Nick had just pitched six scoreless innings against the Oakland A's. I had several opportunities to see him pitch while he was with the Travelers and Salt Lake, and for that, I consider myself truly blessed.
My biggest regret is that a few months ago, Nick was on the front cover of Baseball America. I purchased the magazine with the idea of presenting it to him when I saw him in Tempe during spring training.
Unfortunately, I was unable to go to spring training this year. I have always tried to save articles in magazines and newspapers of Angels prospects and young players.
David Eckstein once told me his mother collected the articles and clippings, but she didn't always find them all. I am truly sorry that I never got a chance to give the magazine to Nick.
God be with you Nick. He has one heck of a baseball team there. Up there, everyone is a hall of famer.
