Boston Celtics vs. Denver Nuggets: Live Score, Results and Game Highlights
Commentary from the Denver Nuggets 97-90 victory over the Boston Celtics on Feb. 19, 2013 at the Pepsi Center in downtown Denver.
The Nuggets were able to emerge with a 97-90 victory despite missing several free throws down the stretch.
The keys to their win were:
1) Controlling Paul Pierce: The 11-time NBA All-Star was held to 10 points on 2-of-14 shooting, and he never really got it going at any point throughout the contest. Credit Corey Brewer and Andre Iguodala for some very tough defense.
2) The Nuggets won the battle of the boards 46-39, and Denver had 10 offensive rebounds in the game
3) Tough 3rd Quarter: The Nuggets outscored the Celtics 29-20 in the third quarter, turning a one point halftime deficit into an eight point lead going into the fourth quarter.
NUGGETS 97, CELTICS 90 — FINAL
The Celtics ran a pick and dive with Jason Terry and Kevin Garnett on the final play, but Kenneth Faried changed KG's shot into a very tough one. The Nuggets got the rebound, and Ty Lawson was fouled. He hit one of two to give the Nuggs a six point lead with just 20 seconds remaining in the game.
The Nuggets will likely hold on to win this one, but the missed free throws down the stretch could have put this one away already.
NUGGETS 96, CELTICS 90 — 9.7 seconds remaining
Danilo Gallinari missed what could have been a real dagger. With the Nuggets up four, Gallo got an open three from the left corner, but was unable to knock it down. He's 4-of-9 from behind the arc on the evening.
Kenneth Faried corralled the rebound and got to the line where he missed both free throws, keeping the door open for the C's to come back.
NUGGETS 94, CELTICS 90 —40.5 seconds, Boston ball, Timeout in play
As much as the Nuggets love to run, they need to be smart enough to run clock when the situation calls for it. In the sequence heading under two minutes, Denver went right back up twice on offensive rebounds, denying themselves the chance to run time off the clock.
There's a point in the game at which time can be more important than the two points, and the Nuggs should have run a good chunk off the clock after grabbing the offensive boards.
NUGGETS 94, CELTICS 88 — 1:09 4th
Andre Iguodala and Wilson Chandler have not scored in the game. The forwards are a combined 0-of-13 from the floor.
NUGGETS 93, CELTICS 86 — 2:30 4th
Andre Miller missed his take to the basket, but Kenneth Faried was in the right place at the right time to grab his 13th board of the night and put it back. Miller had to rush the shot to beat the shot clock, but it can all work out with the Manimal down on the boards.
The Nuggets have nine offensive rebounds on the night and are out-rebounding the Celtics 42-37.
NUGGETS 93, CELTICS 86 — 2:35 4th
When Kenneth Faried missed his sweeping shot across the paint, the rebound was grabbed by the smallest player on the court, 5'10" point guard Ty Lawson. Lawson put the ball back up through traffic for two more, giving him 22 points on the night to go with his six assists and five boards. Lawson's put in a well-rounded game tonight.
NUGGETS 89, CELTICS 84 — 4:47 4th
Corey Brewer has been frustrating Paul Pierce all night. Pierce is now 2-of-12 from the floor and threw it away which led to a Nuggets bucket in transition. Pierce has hit all five free throws he's attempted, but he's been badly outscored by his defensive assignment Danilo Gallinari, who has a game high 22.
NUGGETS 84, CELTICS 81 — 6:30 4th
Jeff Green hit his second three of the night from the corner to cut the Nuggets' lead to just one point. Green has 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting and leads all C's scorers off the bench.
NUGGETS 80, CELTICS 79 — 8:30 4th
It must be wondered if JaVale McGee will ever reach his true potential and just how high that ceiling is. McGee struggles with asthma, and it's limited his minutes all season.
The sentiment amongst Nuggets fans is that McGee should be the starter, but Kosta Koufos has played well and he's a necessary evil until McGee's lungs can handle more minutes.
McGee has five points and three rebounds in 17 minutes of play tonight, and the Nuggets are plus-11 with McGee in the game.
NUGGETS 80, CELTICS 74 — 9:00 4th
Corey Brewer's take to the basket and nifty flip gave the Nuggets an eight point lead before the Cs took it down for their final look of the quarter. Boston went to Avery Bradley who took it in and airballed his running attempt through the lane. Brewer has scored six of the Nuggets' 21 points off the bench tonight.
NUGGETS 78, CELTICS 70 — End of 3rd
A Danilo Gallinari triple extended the Denver lead to six before a Jeff Green turnover which led to a Celtics timeout. Gallinari now has a game high 21 points.
NUGGETS 73, CELTICS 67 — 2:51 3rd, BOS timeout
The Celtics made four of their first five shots in the third quarter, but proceeded to miss five straight until Jeff Green hit a 16-foot jumper from the key area.
Green now has eight points on 4-of-5 shooting. With Jared Sullinger out for the season, the C's not only need solid play from Green, but they also need the former Thunder swingman to "play big." Green is averaging just 3.3 rebounds on the season.
NUGGETS 69, CELTICS 65 —3:46 3rd
Andre Iguodala is having a rough night and still has yet to hit a shot. He's 0-of-6 from the floor, and the Celtics starting backcourt has outscored the Nuggets 27-17, mainly because all 17 Nuggets points have come from Ty Lawson.
NUGGETS 65, CELTICS 63 — 4:47 3rd
Danilo Gallinari's transition three on the left wing capped off a 7-0 Nuggets run to give them the lead as George Karl called for timeout. Gallo now has a game high 18 points on 5-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-6 from behind the arc.
Gallinari had struggled with his shot this year, and can be streaky to be sure, but when he's on the Nuggets are very tough to beat.
NUGGETS 62, CELTICS 60 — 6:00 3rd
The Celtics need for size really shows against a team like tonight's opponent. When Kevin Garnett checked out at the 7:37 mark of the third quarter, he was replaced by Jason Collins. Collins is of dubious merit as an NBA player, despite claims of great defense and hustle.
With Collins providing little help offensively and Brandon Bass undersized and outmatched against Kenneth Faried, it seems the C's likely will fall apart with Garnett on the sidelines.
CELTICS 60, NUGGETS 59 —6:50 3rd
Courtney Lee opened the half with a corner trey for his 15th point, but it was answered by Kenneth Faried's dunk on the other end. Lee can score when called upon, and the Western Kentucky 4-year starter is having one of his finest games of the 11-12 season.
CELTS 53, NUGGS 53 — 10:15 3rd
Ty Lawson hit a 24-foot three from the left wing and closed out the half 5-of-5 from the floor with 12 points. Teammate Danilo Gallinari was effective too in the first half, as he scored 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
But the unexpected contributions of Avery Bradley kept the Celtics in this game, and a Courtney Lee jumper to close the half enabled Doc Rivers' squad to close the first half with a lead.
CELTICS 50, NUGGETS 49 — Halftime
Paul Pierce looked confused as to why he was whistled for a foul as Danilo Gallinari stumbled across the paint, clearly traveling, but drawing a whistle. Pierce only looked half-relieved to see the call changed, as the foul was assessed the Courtney Lee.
CELTICS 48, NUGGETS 43 — 1:40 2nd
Danilo Gallinari caught Avery Bradley on a switch, but he didn't look like he had any idea of how to take advantage of the 6'5" guard. Gallo backed down and spun into the paint, and was able to draw a foul.
But it's not like all that many players look forward to the "advantage" of going against a defender like Bradley.
CELTICS 43, NUGGETS 43 — 3:13 2nd
Ty Lawson never lacks confidence offensively. He has nine points on 4-of-4 shooting and looked great attacking the basket in transition. Lawson also found Andre Miller on the wing for an three, helping Denver carry a 12-4 run to get back in this game.
CELTICS 39, NUGGETS 39 — 4:39 2nd
Courtney Lee appeared to possibly be on track for an All-Star career during his rookie season with the Orlando Magic. Many were high on his prospects around the league, but Lee never blossomed into the talent some thought he may.
Tonight, however, he's looked more like that promising player he was in his time with the Magic. Lee has 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. He and Bradley have given the Boston backcourt some scoring punch, and it's making them an incredibly tough team to beat.
CELTICS 36, NUGGETS 31 — 6:12 2nd
A Courtney Lee three-pointer and an Avery Bradley to Chris Wilcox alley oop capped a 5-0 run that led to a Nuggets timeout early in the second quarter.
CELTICS 29, NUGGETS 25 — 8:43 2nd
Kenneth Faried of the Nuggets said Kevin Garnett was one of his favorite players growing up, and he's relishing the chance to go against his boyhood idol. Faried had 14 points and 12 rebounds in the last matchup against the C's and tonight he has two points and five rebounds in about nine minutes of play.
CELTICS 27, NUGGETS 25 — 9:00 2nd
Depth could play a crucial role in this contest. The Nuggets have one of the deepest and most talented rosters in the NBA, while the Celtics are short-handed. With Rajon Rondo and Leandro Barbosa both out for the season, Doc Rivers is hoping his squad will have the horses to run with the Nuggs.
CELTICS 22, NUGGETS 21 — 11:42 2nd
