Both are former four-star recruits who have been buried on the depth chart behind Chiles' hype. Harris is noted for his intelligence and has that quarterback mentality around him. Chiles, an athlete who started at quarterback for two years in high school, looks more suited to be a running back or receiver. But Brown and Co. are committed to having him behind center. Call it a case of Vince-Young-itis.
The other are of concern for Texas is the defense. The unit looked lost and overmatched at times last season, a large reason why Brown brought in hard-nosed coordinator Will Muschamp from Auburn.
The squad only returns four starters--Rashad Bobino, Lamarr Houston, Brian Orakpo and Ryan Palmer--and Muschamp says it's a wide open race for every position. Orakpo and Roy Miller each registered a sack and corners Palmer and Deon Beasley looked solid in pass coverage. Linebackers Bobino and Roddrick Muckelroy combined for nine tackles.
Muschamp stressed the importance of the defense having a "blue collar" work ethic and "lunch pail" attitude. If the coach's demeanor is any indicator, expect the 2008 Longhorns to be intense and all-business.
But it looks like Texas fans will have to wait through a long summer to find out what this team is going to be all about.
