MARBELLA, Spain (Ticker)—Klara Zakopalova carried the momentum of her remarkable victory over top-seeded Serena Williams into the second round of the Andalucia Tennis Experience.
The unseeded Czech downed countrywoman Renata Voracova, 7-6 (9-7), 5-7, 6-0, on Thursday to book her spot in the quarterfinals of the $500,000 claycourt event.
Zakopalova sent shockwaves through the draw Wednesday with her opening-round upset of Williams, who will lose her No. 1 ranking to Dinara Safina later this month as a result of the loss.
Next up for the 95th-ranked Zakopalova is fifth-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro, who rallied past Russian qualifier Ekaterina Ivanova, 0-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Second seed Jelena Jankovic also moved into the quarters with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Tunisia’s Selima Sfar.
The fourth-ranked Serb, still seeking her first title of 2009 after finishing last season at No. 1, will face Italy’s Roberta Vinci next.
Also advancing to the round of eight Thursday were Sara Errani of Italy and third-seeded Estonian Kaia Kanepi.
