In a story that really demands Pablo Sandoval or Prince Fielder serve as consultants, Mariners prospect Nick Franklin is trying his best to cultivate mass.
It might sound like more of a vacation than real work, but the 21-year old shortstop is downing delicious treats like Chick-fil-A and Chipotle to reach his goal of 200 pounds.
Something tells me Juan Uribe should at the very least get a text message from Franklin to walk him through the specifics.
For the many of you still trying to lose that extra 15 you gained over the holidays, avert your eyes. The Seattle Times reports (h/t Yahoo! Sports) Franklin's journey from 162 pounds to 196 took some hard work.
Franklin starts each morning off with a 1,500-calorie breakfast consisting of six scrambled eggs — yolks included — and a high-caloric protein shake.
By 10:30 a.m., he'll have another 500-calorie shake and then throw in a 1,500-calorie lunch by noon. At 2 p.m., there's another 500-calorie shake, a 250-calorie shake at 3 p.m. and then a 500-calorie shake to "hold me over" until a 1,500-calorie dinner.
When he doesn't have time to cook breakfast, he'll pop by the local Chick-fil-A. Franklin has already been spotted in the clubhouse here scarfing down chicken sandwiches before team workouts.
His lunch choices often involve Chipotle Mexican Bar and Grill. "If you get a bowl there, it's really big," he said. "Double-chicken is like 800 calories — it's insane." He also likes The Corner Bakery because "the pasta there is really good, too."
The one thing I would love to hear is, "you need to get out there and eat, eat, eat." Sadly, I am in a constant struggle the opposite direction of Franklin, and so are many of you.
I know because many of you are standing in line in front of me at Burger King.
And so we live vicariously through a young man who was blessed with the task of sitting down and filling his plate as if he were Pablo Sandoval, and being praised for it.
Obviously, Franklin isn't merely chowing down on a burrito while he watches a marathon session of Pawn Stars.
He is throwing down 6,500 calories a day in tandem with hard work. As Yahoo! Sports reports, the prospect can now squat 425 pounds, is closely watching his body fat and is trying to hold onto his middle infielder mobility.
Now, please don't call Franklin fat, because he is just cultivating mass.
