In 2007, former Sunderland manager and current man with the stare of a psychopath, Roy Keane, commented on how players didn’t want to sign for his team because their wives didn’t want to move up to the Northeast of England (via BBC Sport):
These so-called big stars are people we are supposed to be looking up to. Well, they are weak and soft. If they don't want to come because their wife wants to go shopping in London, it's a sad state of affairs… I could name four big players and clearly their wives and girlfriends are running their lives because they are doing these photoshoots and that kind of stuff.
Well, Roy, I can go one better than you and name you seven WAGs who have hindered their footballing husband’s (or boyfriend’s) career.
Please don’t hurt me, Roy.
Remember former Liverpool striker Andriy Voronin?
Remember that Ukrainian player whose other half was labelled "Mrs. Chavski" and the "world’s worst-dressed WAG?"
Yeah, of course you do.
Well, that’s the problem. Andriy will be best remembered in English football for his wife’s fashion hate crimes, such as wearing a leopard-skin all-in-one or this blue tracksuit monstrosity and not his glorious record of five goals in 27 games at Anfield.
Danielle O'Hara isn’t the archetypal girl you want to take home to meet your parents, but in her defence, there’s no actual proof that she has ever harmed any of the careers of the footballers she’s dated (and she’s dated a few footballers).
But with her chequered past, it can’t have exactly helped any of them go on to rewrite the record books.
In 2006, she was stripped of the Miss Great Britain crown after claims she was dating one of the judges, former Man United, Spurs and Milwall star, Teddy Sheringham, and over her nude photo shoot for Playboy.
In 2007, she was accused of racism and bullying toward Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty on Celebrity Big Brother.
Not to mention her claiming on TV that Winston Churchill was “the first black president of America.”
In fact, as well as the above, the list of names she's been linked with reads like a who's who of noughties Premier League squad players:
Although, Danielle has since settled down and married Wolves’ Jamie O’Hara, it can’t be the most healthy pre-match ritual for him to look at the opposing team’s lineup knowing there’s a good chance his wife has dated one of the players from the opposing team.
Tulisa is either best known for being a member of hip-hop group, N-Dubz, a solo artist in her own right or a judge on The X Factor.
Danny Simpson is either best known for being Newcastle United’s right-back or for dating Tulisa.
For the media, Tulisa is a huge, huge star. She fills column inches faster than she fills an album with bland music. Until he started dating Tulisa, the non-sporting press thought Danny Simpson was Homer’s brother.
Danny, while he is a decent full-back, probably won’t ever represent his country or a secure a big-money move to Real Madrid. He will probably forever be best known for who he’s dated rather than his talents on the pitch.
Plus, when you’re a footballer and the person you have a high-profile relationship with has had a sex tape leaked, the terrace chants write themselves.
But look at it this way: Tulisa is still with Danny Simpson despite him playing for Newcastle United, in the Northeast. So that’s a big two fingers to Roy Keane.
When you’re a Premiership footballer, nothing about a WAG hinders you more than when she has the cheek to be a national treasure. Especially if you’re quite keen to cheat on her.
When it was revealed that Ashley had been having extra-marital affairs to his heart’s content behind the back of his wife Cheryl, he became open to ridicule from the rest of the nation. And he already wasn’t the most popular person in certain areas of North London as it was.
For some people in Britain, Ashley Cole is better known for his turbulent relationship with Cheryl than his undeniable football skills.
If Cheryl wasn’t so famous and her leaving Ashley hadn’t been such a big deal, and Ash didn’t play in front of fans constantly chanting “Where’s your Cheryl gone?” for so long, would Leighton Baines be now edging him out of the England set up?
That’s not for me to answer, but it does sound like a plot to a truly terrible time-travel film.
David Beckham’s career has now got to a stage where it transcends actually playing the game. And, let’s face it, in commercial terms—there’s probably never been anyone more successful in the sport.
However, it seems due to wife Victoria’s fashion line, whenever the time comes for brand Beckham to move clubs, he’s limited to clubs that are in a city that hosts a major fashion week.
So until the city Sunderland is a booming hub for fashionistas (which is only a matter of time) it looks like their team won’t ever sign D-Becks.
Former Coronation Street actress Helen Flanagan has helped boyfriend Scott Sinclair’s football career as much as a broken metatarsal would.
When Scott was playing for Welsh club Swansea City, Helen helped endear herself to the Swans fans by hitting Twitter to tell the world how the entire nation of Wales is boring.
When the inevitable backlash ensued. She apologised and justified her comments by saying:
My tweet wasn’t meant to offend or be insensitive to Swansea fans sorry guys! When Scott's on away games I’m on my own in Wales.
Oh, that’s OK then. You’re not saying that Scott is boring. You’re just saying Wales is boring. Hang on…
Eventually Helen took one Twitter user's advice to:
**** off back to Manchester [Helen’s hometown] then and take your money grabbing boyfriend with you.
And Scott Sinclair signed for Manchester City, where he now currently makes as many appearances as the Loch Ness Monster.
This slide is sponsored by the word “allegedly.”
Vanessa Perroncel will be forever known as the biggest football femme fatale this side of Sandra Redknapp.
For those who don’t know her by name, you’ll be more than familiar with her work. She was Wayne Bridge’s girlfriend who allegedly had an affair with Wayne’s then-Chelsea and England teammate and captain, John Terry.
This led to them falling out and the famous missed handshake when Wayne’s next club, Manchester City, played Terry’s Chelsea
And it also led to Wayne refusing to play for England while John Terry was in the side.
Wayne Bridge now plays for Championship side Brighton Hove Albion.
But that’s not all, the Terry/Bridge/Perroncel affair also led to an on-pitch spat between Anton Ferdinand and John Terry, where allegedly Anton accused him of sleeping with his "mate’s missus" and John Terry allegedly racially abused Anton in return.
Which led to Anton and John Terry falling out.
And John Terry being stripped of the England captaincy, which led to then England manager Fabio Capello resigning prior to Euro 2012.
Which also led to Anton’s brother, Rio Ferdinand falling out with John Terry, giving the new England manager, Roy Hodgson the decision to having to choose between Terry and Rio when selecting the Euro 2012 squad. He chose JT, jeopardizing Rio's future with the national team.
But this also led to John Terry quitting the England team ahead of the FA finding him guilty of racial abuse.
So in a way, not only did Vanessa Perroncel hinder Wayne Bridge’s career. She hindered John Terry’s, Rio Ferdinand’s, Anton Ferdinand’s and Fabio Capello’s career.
Not bad for a day’s work.
