When Mets manager Terry Collins assumed his post in 2011, the least of his worries stood at the top of his lineup card. That was Jose Reyes’ domain. The All-Star shortstop, a conventional leadoff hitter, stole 39 bases and won the National League batting title that season. Then he signed with Miami, leaving a gaping void atop the Mets order yet to be adequately addressed.
