On the rare occasion he's had an opening on his Missouri coaching staff, Gary Pinkel has usually made his staff younger. After the 2008 season, he hired Josh Henson, then a 33-year-old assistant at LSU, to coach the offensive line. Also that offseason, he promoted Barry Odom, 32 at the time, from director of football operations to safeties coach. Then, when Odom left after the 2011 season, Pinkel brought in Alex Grinch, who was 31.

But when David Yost left the staff in December, Pinkel had one quality in mind when considering candidates.
