A three-peat for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover is the Holy Grail for female models.
Kate Upton has stolen the show, again, earning the coveted cover in 2013 for the second year in a row. There’s no denying the star power Upton has created for herself in the fashion, sports and entertainment industries.
She’s been everywhere, literally, since earning “Rookie of the Year” honors after her shoot for the 2011 edition of the magazine.
But where does it all end for the 20-year-old American model?
A three-peat is certainly a possibility for Ms. Upton, which would put her into some very elite company in the modeling world.
Australian beauty Elle Macpherson was the last model to achieve that distinction from 1986 to '88. Christie Brinkley, an American model superstar, also achieved the feat from 1979 to ’81.
Macpherson, Brinkley, Daniela Pestova and Kathy Ireland are also the only models to have been featured on the cover of the magazine three or more times.
Elite company, indeed.
Katherine Webb, A.J. McCarron’s girlfriend, was thrust into the spotlight after her exposure during his BCS National Championship Game victory. Webb has leaped from small time to a superstar in the matter of a month and she will definitely carry that success into next year.
McCarron and the Alabama Crimson Tide’s quest for a three-peat of their own next year may prove to propel her even further into American living rooms as the undoubted press exposure will give her an edge for the coveted cover.
Hannah Davis, Derek Jeter’s girlfriend, is a 22-year-old model who was rumored to be in the running to usurp Upton from her mantle as early as the 2013 cover. Things didn’t pan out in her rookie shoot for the magazine, but big things could be in store for her next year.
She’s blowing up in the modeling world, earning coveted spots with Tommy Hilfiger, Victoria’s Secret and Elle Mexico magazine. Recently she was featured in a DirecTV commercial as the company’s DVR-wielding genie.
Christine Teigen, 27, is perhaps a dark horse so to speak when making a run at the Sports Illustrated cover model honor in 2013. While she isn’t dating a famous athlete, Teigen is currently engaged to be married to singer-songwriter John Legend.
Teigen is a veteran of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, having appeared in the pages four times, including a debut (like Upton) in 2010 as the “Rookie of the Year.” A nod for the cover would be a big leap for the model, but is certainly not out of reach if things go in her favor professionally this year.
