Hall of Fame power forward and TNT NBA analyst Charles Barkley took the time out on Thursday to congratulate Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn and his staff for a job well done. The always vocal Barkley played for the Tigers' basketball team from 1981-1984, and the school retired his No. 34 jersey in 2001.
After taking over for the fired Gene Chizik, Malzahn was left with an untenable recruiting situation. He had only two months to not only bring in new talent to Auburn, but also get Chizik's top-flight recruits to stay. Though Malzahn ultimately lost guys like 5-star linebacker Reuben Foster, he still came through with the 10th-ranked recruiting class, according to 247Sports.
With college football's national signing day in the books, the Auburn Tigers emerged as one of Wednesday's surprising winners, and one of their most famous alumni is beaming with pride.
