Barcelona's Biggest Remaining Fixtures This Season
With Barcelona already through the halfway point of the season, the going should only get tougher. La Blaugrana have many difficult encounters coming up and some will make or break their season.
The Catalans are still competing in three major tournaments and have a chance of winning the treble this season. Yet things will get very difficult from this point on.
So which matches will the club give the most attention to?
In this slideshow we will look at the biggest matches left for Barcelona’s season, as well as possible encounters to come.
The importance of these fixtures will rely on the opponent and what the match means for Barcelona’s season.
Champions League Encounter with AC Milan
Though AC Milan may not quite be at the level of years past, they will still pose a threat to Barcelona.
The Catalans will have to beat the Italians over two legs if they want to win the Champions League, and that in itself makes the meeting vastly important.
But the lack of Milan’s new star will not make the encounter any less exciting. These two clubs are historically great and will put on a wonderful performance for fans.
For Barcelona, Milan currently stands in the way of Champions League glory.
The first encounter will take place in Italy on February 20, and the return leg in Spain will occur on March 12.
Copa Del Rey Second Leg Against Real Madrid
After playing to a 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu, Barcelona’s home leg against Real Madrid will be very important. The tie is wide open for either team to win, and a trip to the Copa del Rey final is on the line.
Barcelona will have the advantage by playing at home and already having one road goal. But that does not mean the match will be easy by any means.
If Barcelona can advance, they will play in the Copa del Rey final with a chance to repeat as champions.
With the treble being Barcelona's goal this season, beating Real Madrid is a must.
The second leg of the Copa del Rey will take place at the Camp Nou on February 26.
La Liga Encounter with Real Madrid
If one El Clasico is big, a second will be enormous for Barcelona.
Only days after facing Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey, the great rivals will face off again in La Liga action. With Real Madrid fighting for second place in the league, the encounter will no doubt be heated.
But the match will also be important to Barcelona, who will need to have a good result to keep their solid lead atop the La Liga table.
To this point, Barcelona has not gotten the better of Los Blancos despite having the best start to a season in history. Beating their rivals head-to-head would be a favorable moment if the Catalans do win La Liga.
Barcelona will travel to Madrid on March 2 to take on their rivals in La Liga action.
Away Match with Athletic Bilbao
Though Barcelona has recently had no trouble in handling Athletic Bilbao, the encounters between the two clubs are always intense. The Basque side is very nationalistic like the Catalans, and each club plays for much pride.
The Catalans were able to win last season’s Copa del Rey with a 3-0 victory against Bilbao. But the Basques will want to put in a good showing at home against Barcelona.
Athletic Bilbao has struggled mightily this season, for sure. No matter these struggles, however, they will put up a fight against Barcelona.
The last encounter saw Barcelona win big by a score of 5-1. That in itself will make Bilbao very tough to beat.
Pride is always on the line, but now, it may be more so than ever.
Barcelona will travel to the Basque lands on April 28 to take on Athletic Bilbao.
Late La Liga Encounter with Atletico Madrid
If there is one game that Barcelona will have marked on their calendar, it is the late season encounter with Atletico Madrid. The Madrid-based club is currently second in the table and do not look like letting up.
Though Barcelona could already have La Liga wrapped up, the match against Atletico may decide who wins the league.
The last time the two powerhouses met, it was Barcelona who walked away victorious.
La Blaugrana dominated the game and pulled away to a 4-1 win. The encounter showed that Atletico Madrid was not yet able to compete with the best in Spain.
But since then, Atletico has looked even more impressive.
The most difficult part will be the fact it is an away game for the Catalans. Fans will certainly want to tune in for the big encounter, as it could determine Barcelona’s entire season.
Barcelona will travel to Madrid to face Atletico on May 12.
Of course there could possibly be other big games for Barcelona. A final in the Copa del Rey could take place if the Catalans get past Real Madrid. Also, the next round of the Champions League looks likely as well.
