Puppy Bowl IX: 5 Best Videos from Last 8 Years

1 of 6

What could be better than puppies and football? Well, a few things but I've been warned to stay on topic.

In case you're unfamiliar with the Puppy Bowl, it is an annual football game—of sorts—that features puppies unknowingly scoring touchdowns and delighting viewers with their personalities.

The game airs on Animal Planet, and this year's version will be broadcast at 3 p.m. ET on Super Bowl Sunday. I haven't followed the game since its inception, so I decided to take a look back at some of the highlights from previous Puppy Bowls.

It was hard narrowing down the best videos, and my apologies to the pups that didn't make the cut. Here are my picks for the best highlights in the event's history.

Abigail Is Leaping Chubby Puppies

I'm not good with dog breeds, so I'll be making the obvious visual distinctions and name references as I discuss the action.

The frisky black-and-white puppy was like Colin Kaepernick running the read-option in this video.

The chubby white puppy was like Haloti Ngata trying to take an angle on the speedy San Francisco 49ers quarterback. Ngata is a great athlete, but much like the adorable puppy I'm comparing him to, he doesn't have a shot at keeping his man (or girl) in front of him.

    Check out the video here.

Illegal Touching

Skuba attempts to raise the rating on this video with a not-so-neutral-zone infraction. The referee has to intervene to restore order.

It seems as though Skuba may be a repeat offender, so he'll be hearing from Roger Goodell's office shortly. We're trying to change the culture of the Puppy Bowl, and this type of behavior just can't be tolerated.

Do we know if Bernard Pollard is this puppy's owner?

    Check out the video here.

Excessive Celebration

Perhaps Riley got too excited during the game, but he lost control of his bodily functions. He made a messy on the 20-yard-line, and that delayed the game for clean-up purposes.

I wonder how many times something like this has actually happened in an NFL game, and we just aren't aware of it.

I guess that's a good way to discourage someone from tackling you.

Beyonce Doesn't Have Anything on These Cats

5 of 6

    OK, I'm lying.

I'd much rather watch Beyonce than some kittens on a contraption that looks like a Barbie strip club playset, but it's still kind of cute to see them marvel at their surroundings.

They look a bit more in awe of the set than the puppies.

It is amazing to see the difference in the cats' personalities and the dogs'. The cats seem to be far more snooty. I suppose that's why some people are cat people, and some consider themselves dog people.

Marta Just Got the Alex Smith Treatment

6 of 6

The puppy Marta was doing just fine playing with her toy when some mean puppy (cough...Jim Harbaugh) comes and takes it away from her. The look on her face is priceless.

Pause the video at the 34-second mark. She's like: "I know he didn't just do that to me..."

Unlike Smith, Marta doesn't take losing her possessions kindly. She fights to get her stuff back.

Unfortunately, Smith wasn't in quite the same position when Harbaugh demoted him in favor of Kaepernick. But I'm sure he had a Marta-like look on his face when he got word he wasn't going to be the starting quarterback anymore.

    It's a dog-eat-dog world.
