In absolute terms, 33 is not old. But for a baseball player, 33 has long been the beginning of the end. The recently departed Stan Musial once identified a baseball player's peak as lasting from 28 to 32, and he felt himself slowing down after that. His contemporary Mickey Mantle was well on the down slope by 33.
