When San Francisco 49ers players and coaches cast ballots for their 2012 team awards, the Missouri delegation did very well. Missouri in this case was definitely a red state — as in the color of the 49ers’ uniforms.

Linebacker Aldon Smith won the Most Valuable Player award, an acknowledgement of his franchise-record 19.5 sacks this season. He chased Big 12 quarterbacks around for two seasons (2009-2010) as a starting linebacker at Mizzou before becoming the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft. He’s from Raytown, Mo.
