The ad for the new CLA does an amazing job of hooking the audience.
It starts by showing the supermodel in short shorts with her hair blowing, followed by text that reads, "Kate Upton washes the new Mercedes CLA in slow motion."
Of course, what ensues is not what people expect:
Oh, the power that attractive women have over men. It is truly incredible what they can get guys to do.
In one television spot, Mercedes was able to capture the sex appeal of one of the most high-profile models on the planet as well as the humor that is expected from these commercials.
The creators also accomplished the primary goal of getting people to look at the product, whether they wanted to or not.
Finally, they have people talking about it after the fact. Memorability is the biggest thing that commercials strive for, and Ms. Upton ensures that this one lives on.
According to Brad Tuttle of Time Magazine, a 30-second spot during the big game costs companies an average of $4 million. Non-football fans often watch the entire event for the commercials alone. It is important not to waste this kind of money on some forgettable jingle.
Mercedes swung for the fences with this ad and certainly hit a home run.
While fans might have wanted to see Kate Upton in even more revealing clothing, that can be found in plenty of other places. This ad was able to capture her beauty and yet turned it into a clever and humorous commercial.
This will certainly be one of the more memorable advertisements of Super Bowl XLVII.
