Matt Anderson waited seven years for a chance to play his first game in the NHL. When the call finally came, he could easily have missed it.

Called up from the Devils’ minor league team in Albany, N.Y., the 30-year-old right winger was in southern Vermont on a getaway during the AHL All-Star break.
