Robert Griffin III Named 2012 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year

Robert Griffin III was one of the most electrifying, successful players in the NFL during the 2012 season, and he was just honored for his achievements by being named the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year:

Griffin received 29 votes from the 50-member panel, with Luck getting 11 and Wilson 10.

The 2011 Heisman Trophy winner led the ‘Skins to a 10-6 record, a surprising NFC East title and the No. 4 seed in the playoffs. While things did end on a sour note—the young QB injured his ACL and LCL in the Wild Card Weekend loss to the Seattle Seahawks—his body of work over 15 regular-season games was impossible to ignore.

In that span, Griffin completed 258 of 393 passes for 3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He added a new dynamic to the Washington offense with his legs, taking off 120 times for 815 yards and seven scores.

While those numbers are eye-popping, and RGIII deserves all the credit in the world for dragging a mediocre squad to the postseason, he absolutely wasn’t a shoo-in for this honor.

This was an extremely close race for the Offensive ROY, as two other signal-callers from the 2012 draft class earned the chance to start the campaign for their respective teams by also making the playoffs.

One was Russell Wilson, who came from seemingly nowhere to earn the Seahawks starting job and lead Seattle to a divisional-round victory over the ‘Skins.

The other deserving candidate was Andrew Luck of the Indianapolis Colts, who quarterbacked his team to an 11-5 record with largely the same roster that went 2-14 last year.

Doug Martin, the stud Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back, was also in the conversation as an extreme long shot.

Regardless, RGIII was justly rewarded for rejuvenating football in our nation’s capital. He compiled the stats and had the success that a deserving Rookie of the Year recipient should.

Congratulations to Griffin, the Redskins organization and the fans.
