MOTM: Matt Smith
Oldham Athletic will play Everton at home in the FA Cup Fifth Round.
Ten thousand Oldham fans erupt with joy as the whistle goes, and League One Oldham Athletic have taken a massive scalp by beating Premier League side, and last year's beaten finalists, Liverpool.
Quick starts to both halves have done the damage in the end; Matt Smith put Oldham ahead after only two minutes with a downward header from close range before Luis Suarez equalised with a placed shot from inside the penalty area.
Right on the stroke of half time a Brad Jones fumble allowed Lee Croft to cross for Smith to prod in his second, and just a minute after the restart it was three for Oldham; Wabara's towering header looping over the keeper and in off the bar.
Liverpool pressed hard to get back in the game and Joe Allen's deflected volley gave them hope with 10 minutes remaining—but Oldham saw out the game with some brave blocks and plenty of determination, to take their place in Round Five.
Full time at Boundary Park
Oldham Athletic 3 Liverpool 2
90+5'—We've had the full five minutes of injury time. Robinson lets the ball run beyond him and it's an Oldham throw-in. Surely all over.
90+4'—Final seconds. Liverpool need to get the ball forward. One final chance, perhaps.
90+3'—Oldham defending well. Gerrard tries a long pass to Downing, but it's shielded out of play. Time running very short now for the Premier League team.
90+2'—Less than 200 seconds for Liverpool to find this equaliser. Sturridge shoots from range...but it is poor, aimless and wide. No record for him today by the looks of things.
SIX MINUTES of added time to be played.
89'—OFF THE CROSSBAR! Gerrard picks up the ball and spanks it from 25 yards—he beats Bouzanis but it cracks back off the bar. So close.
89'—One minute plus injury time remaining. Liverpool desperate to get the ball towards the front two in the penalty area, who have seen very little fall their way in the second half.
87'—Jack Robinson gets into a great position to cross down the left but opts to shoot and his effort is skied. Suarez and Rodgers are visibly not impressed.
86'—CLOSE! Liverpool getting close to that equaliser. Allen spins and twists in the area before shooting, but it's deflected wide. A poor Bouzanis punch gives Downing a chance to cross, but the keeper takes the second chance far more confidently.
85'—Five minutes plus injury time remaining. Downing battles away down the right but loses possession before he can cross. Henderson's cross finds Gerrard who shoots, and it's deflected over for yet another corner.
83'—Downing gets down the right and crosses, and once more it's turned behind for a corner.
Oldham sub: Smith stretchered off, David Mellor coming on.
81'—Matt Smith has jumped into a teammate in an aerial challenge and is getting some treatment to what looks like a shoulder injury. The time will be added on, but it's taking some of the impetus out of Liverpool's recovery.
Liverpool back in it with barely more than 10 minutes to play! The corner is cleared to the edge of the area and Joe Allen volleys it back in first time, and the ball takes a deflection off Jose Baxter and flies into the corner of the goal. 3-2 and all to play for!
Oldham Athletic 3 Liverpool 2
Joe Allen, 79 mins
78'—Shelvey plays a long pass to Suarez, but it's straight through to the keeper. Liverpool haven't really had too many shots yet to trouble Bouzanis. Downing cuts into shoot now and the Aussie stopper spills it, but the defender Grounds reacts before Suarez and it's wide for a corner.
77'—SHOULD HAVE BEEN FOUR. Simpson finds himself in space in the centre of the penalty area to shoot first time, but he steers his effort wide of the post. Last action for Simpson, too.
Oldham sub: Daniel Taylor on for Robbie Simpson.
76'—Jonjo Shelvey lines up a shot from 25 yards and drives it hard—but also drives it over the bar. Into the final 15 minutes and Liverpool still need two goals.
Liverpool could do with getting a move on here. Both in terms of urgency and actually playing some passes together.— Ian Doyle (@IanDoyleSport) January 27, 2013
73'—Simpson is down and needing treatment, or perhaps just a rest. Paul Dickov the Oldham manager has yet to make any changes in this half. He did make one before the break due to injury, of course.
71'—Goodness. Coates almost loses the ball on the edge of his own area before recovering, and then Smith grabs him by the shirt and is booked.
Liverpool sub: Sterling off, Shelvey on.
71'—Baxter tries his luck from range again, but once more his shot drifts past the post.
70'—Jonjo Shelvey is getting ready to come on for Liverpool; that will be their third and final change.
