The WWE’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view is almost here.

The 2013 card is jam-packed from top to bottom with exciting and intriguing matchups.

The 30-man battle royale will determine the WWE Championship (or World Heavyweight Championship) contender at WrestleMania. That epic battle of endurance and tact will help shape the company's main storylines during the coming months, and possibly even further.

In addition to finding out the contender for WrestleMania, the championships themselves could very well change hands at the PPV.

Let’s take a look at three storylines that will steal the show and make this an event to remember once the dust settles in Phoenix.

The Return of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

Johnson is arguably the biggest draw in WWE history, given his huge leap from the ring to the silver screen. John Cena has made the plunge, but hasn’t reached the iconic status that Johnson has achieved both on the screen and in the ring.

Having The Rock recapture the title would end an exceedingly long reign by CM Punk and set up a road to WrestleMania that would be headlined with him as the promotion’s champion.

While The Great One has been back for weeks, his official return to a headline status like this matchup solidifies his return, win or lose. The buildup has been great as both Punk and he rocked the mic and built the feud to the boiling point in the weeks leading up to Phoenix.

You can’t lose here.

Potential Surprise Entrants to 30-Man Royal Rumble Match

Rumors will continue to swirl until all 30 men have entered the ring. It’s an unavoidable fact of life when it comes to Royal Rumble. Everyone from Brock Lesnar to The Undertaker has been speculated to be potential surprise entrants into the huge match.

While these “guest” participants will not likely win the Rumble, they could set up short-term angles to get themselves back into the mix in the months leading up to WrestleMania.

Where Will The Shield Make Their Mark?

The Shield attacked The Rock on the final Raw before Royal Rumble, leading to the no-interference stipulation being added to the WWE Championship bout by Vince McMahon.

While they may steer clear in order to prevent Punk from losing his title, there are other avenues they could spring up on throughout the card.

An unscheduled appearance has become the group's forte, and another one in Phoenix could help bring about a better understanding about the group’s motivation and future role in the promotion.
