Ryan Giggs has been on the receiving end of some criticism from reds this season, after below par performances. Sir Alex Ferguson has sold him short in this respect, playing him in more games than his old legs can handle. Giggs has shown flashes of brilliance this season, but the occasions have been few and far between.

Whilst we’re all keen for Giggs to beat Sir Bobby Charlton’s appearance record, it shouldn’t be at the cost of Giggs’ form. Nobody wants to remember him as that player who used to be good but who now is shit.

Nani has had some brilliant games this season and whilst his shooting is rather hit and miss (just look at his incredible finish against Liverpool at the weekend, only to have a wild shot got out for a throw in a few minutes later), he appears to be far more consistent than our legend and hero, Giggs. Was he given more games, then I am sure Giggs’ form would improve.

Giggs made his debut for United’s first team in March 1991, some 17 years ago. Aged 34 now, it’s incredible to think that Giggs has spent half his life playing for United. For any player to have spent such a large amount of time playing top flight football is an achievement, but to do so at one club, arguably the biggest club in the World, is incredible.

So in the month marking the anniversary of his debut, all those years ago, I’d like to offer up my praise to Ryan Giggs, United legend.

  1. Wonderful memories for any football fan. Thanks for this great piece of footballing nostalgia.

Now what if he had played for England...!

  2. Giggs has been an amazing player but i think he should retire at the end of the season. He aint getting any better infact he's just getting slower. For his own best he should retire.

  3. Giggsy Is my favourite player,he deserves all the respect!!! but......i dont think he should retire yet,i do think that his experience will help alot in champions league and help the younger players.
i love Rooney and Ronaldo...but i still think they have to learn respect and to be legends for united not other aspects.Ryan will help coming off the bench rather than starting, unless he hits the form he did last season- just because hes not running down the wing as fast as he was 18 years ago, doesnt meam hes not as good- hes still quick for a 34 yr old. Most players dont even last at a club for 5 yrs.......Ryan been in the Utd first team for over 18 years- dont push him os call him......chant for him!!!! He fights for his fans and never demands money and is never in the paper for the wrong things-hes a great role modal and STILL a great player!!! By Stephanie

  4. True legend in every way. Player, role model and ambassador!

  5. Amazing man.

While I agree with your thoughts on the reason for his dip in form, I really don't think that Nani is consistent enough to really merit that many more first team appearances. I'd say maybe a few more than he's got so far, but not to the point of forcing his way into the first team. He's young, crass, and unpolished. Ryan Giggs was displaying maturity and vision well beyond his years and that's why he was handed a first team spot so early.

That's just something Nani doesn't display. He needs time and teaching from the likes of Ryan to develop into a complete player who can string together those moments of brilliance into match winning performances, much like Ronaldo. Giving more first team games can't complete a player in and of itself except in extreme circumstances.

Evra can play on the wing and Silvestre is back from injury. Why do people forget about Park? He's a tireless runner and always seems to be in the right place at the right time to nick a goal even if he does bottle the sitters. We've a lot more options than just Nani in for Giggs. Sometimes I wish we'd use them.
