Manchester United Transfer News: Wilfried Zaha Not Right Target for Red Devils
The talented Wilfried Zaha has emerged as the favorite to sign with Manchester United, and a deal could happen as soon as this week (via the Daily Mail). The 20-year-old winger has been playing for Crystal Palace. He came up through the youth system at Palace when he was only 12.
But Zaha is not the right target for United. They have had no problems scoring goals and have plenty of depth in their attacking positions. Robin van Persie has scored 18 times, top in the English Premier League. As a team, the Red Devils have scored 57 goals this season, and more of the same is expected through the season.
While Zaha will bring young legs to this club, he has found the back of the net only 12 times in 109 appearances for Crystal Palace. If he posts similar stats in the Premier League, he will be lost in the mix of an experienced group of United strikers and wingers.
The attacking positions for the Red Devils doesn’t need to be altered. United currently hold a five-point advantage over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League standings.
What has worked to their advantage is coming from behind to steal wins. As the season winds down, don’t expect the Red Devils to continue that feat. Opposing defenses will rise to the occasion, and United could see themselves dethroned from the top of the table if they can’t figure out how to stop their opponents from scoring.
What United needs to do is look for stability in their defense. Allowing 30 goals so far this season isn’t going to win them a championship. If they pursue a defender then United will be tough for any opponent. It is the goals they have conceded that will be the crux of this team.
United have been linked to Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay. If they were to sign Garay, it would boost their defense. The 26-year-old Argentinian would be the right move at this point for United, who need a skilled defender.
While Zaha has a bright future, for the Red Devils to pursue him now would be a mistake. He hasn’t proven much yet. If United have the opportunity to pursue him when he has established himself, and their attacking corps has been split up, then take advantage of that opportunity. But at this point, there’s too much risk to spend £15 million on Zaha with the experienced attack Man U currently possess.
