Can you smell what the WWE is cooking?
The build up to the The Rock and CM Punk this coming Sunday at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view has been pretty darn good. The vignettes have been solid, the in ring confrontations have been epic and of course with the intrusion of The Shield Monday night on Raw, the anticipation is running like wild fire.
It would appear that the first PPV event of the year will meet the expectations of not only the WWE, but with the fans in attendance and the millions (and I mean millions) watching at home. There is only one thing we all have not considered or at least talked about. What happens if the match between the two stars in the main event for the WWE Title is an epic failure?
Vince McMahon has already handed down the edict about Punk losing the WWE Title if The Shield is involved in the title match in anyway. But for some reason, I think that just fuels the fire a bit and adds to the idea that others will become involved in the outcome. This is a match that cannot end cleanly for many reasons, most notably because The Rock is a part time wrestler and full time actor who cannot defend the WWE Title on a regular basis.
With Vickie Guerrero, Paul Heyman, Brad Maddox and some guy named Brock Lesnar as possible "deal breakers" who could change the outcome of the match, it is nearly impossible to guess which "ending' will take place and who will be the one with the Scarlet Letter branded on their chest.
Chemistry is an important component in this match for many reasons. The build up, the two stars in the ring and the impact the victory has on the road to WrestleMania. I like the idea of the two superstars in the ring, but I don't like the possibility of these two being flawless in the ring.
John Cena and The Rock had a whole year to prepare for their match. Punk and The Rock have had six months. Bleacher Report columnists have written about The Rock and his schedule, his conditioning, the fact he only comes to the WWE for a cup of coffee and leaves. Those components are key factors in determining a winner and loser. And CM Punk and The Rock must deliver on every hold, move and counter move.
There is no avoiding the need for perfection. The question is can these two greats deliver.
Like it was said before, John Cena and The Rock put on an epic performance in Miami. The build and marketing was perfect. This match and these two wrestlers have to be just a little bit better.
If not, there could be a truly bad situation for the WWE in a matter of minutes following the contest.
