Valencia vs. Real Madrid: Los Merengues Move on to Copa Del Rey Semifinals
Real Madrid were never really troubled by Valencia as the hosts were missing that final pass that could have gotten them back in the game.
Now Los Merengues will face either Malaga or Barcelona, who will play their second leg on Thursday.
Valencia 1-1 Real Madrid (1-3 Aggregate)
Valencia: Guaita; Joao, Rami, R. Costa, Cissokho V. Ruiz; T. Costa, Viera, Jonas, Guardado, Valdez
Real Madrid: Casillas; Arbeloa, Varane, Albiol, Coentrao; Xabi, Khedira; Di María, Özil, Cristiano, Benzema
Thank you all for joining me for this Copa del Rey clash.
Real Madrid will have to wait only a day before finding out who their opponent will be in the semifinals.
Malaga and Barcelona will have their fates decided at La Rosaleda.
That will do it.
Real Madrid have booked a place in the Copa del Rey semifinals and Valencia leave with nothing but pride to show for a fruitless pair of games.
90+—We're just seconds from time and the referee is handing out cards all over the place.
Time is running out for Valencia. Only 3 minutes to FT, still need 3 goals. Real Madrid will be in the semifinals.— La Liga News (@laliga_news) January 23, 2013
Di Maria gets his bath 3 minutes early for a foolish kick out at Pereira. Silly, silly, silly. Madrid to finish with 9.— AS English (@English_AS) January 23, 2013
88'—RED CARD for Angel di Maria!
This will not matter in the end for Valencia, but it will certainly have an effect on Madrid.
Di Maria gets sent off for kicking Peirera off the ball and now Madrid will be without Coentrao, Di Maria and probably Casillas for the semifinals.
Either Barcelona or Malaga will be awaiting them there.
85'—Less than five minutes of regular time left and this one is clearly over.
Angel di Maria goes down for a smack from Ever Banega and both teams are happy to see some time wasted.
Los Che have had plenty of opportunities over these two legs, but were never able to turn them into goals.
Valencia could really, really use Soldado right now.— Sidonie Blaugrana (@SidonieM10) January 23, 2013
79'—Oh so close!
Aly Cissokho takes a good shot on goal, but it goes just over the bar and the team looks out of ideas now.
75'—There are just 15 minutes left and Valencia are almost out of the Copa del Rey.
Three goals are needed to move on and their efforts of breaking Madrid's defense are failing.
71'—More attacking from Valencia here, but Madrid are doing a fine job of keeping them away from goal and not allowing a shot.
66'—So close from Tino Costa!
The second goal was almost found as a long shot was taken and hit around Adan.
Unfortunately, it also missed the goal and the score remains level.
65'—Madrid are looking a bit crippled here as the attack has weakened and the counter-attack moved more deeply.
Los Che continue to hold possession without much threat at the back from Los Merengues.
61'—Los Che are throwing everything at Madrid now and using almost everyone in attack.
They are spreading the Madrid defense pretty well, but really missing that final pass and finishing.
56'—Great move from Valencia to bring on Pablo Piatti here.
The little speedster will bring some fire and hopefully width to Los Che's attack.
55'—Valencia are really doing their best to get in shooting range here.
The hosts know they have a huge hill to climb, but they are not backing down yet.
Slammed through the box, did take a very faint touch (not going to risk saying who yet...) and in under Adán. 1-1 on the night. 1-3 agg.— AS English (@English_AS) January 23, 2013
More on the goal
Los Che have a bit of hope here as Adam makes a mistake in goal.
Costa sends a low free kick in and it's barely touched by Valdez, but Adan definitely should have stopped in.
The ball goes just under the keeper's hands and the red card hurts Madrid twice in a matter of seconds.
52'—GOOOOOL TINO COSTA!!!!!
Fabio Coentrao uses his hand to stop a cross and the Portuguese receives a second yellow for it.
The left-back had been a bit testy throughout the match and is sent off after not doing much.
50'—Big save from Guaita again!
Madrid start a perfect counter-attack with Di Maria using his great pace to beat the defense.
The winger finds space and bends a shot on goal, but Guaita once again makes a great save.
47'—Los Che get a decent chance early, but the effort is a bit wasted by Valdez who is beaten by his short stature.
Here we go! No changes have been made for either team as we begin the second half.
