The NFC Championship Game between the Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers was delayed for a short time after Falcons receiver Julio Jones took out an unsuspecting security guard along the sidelines.
While attempting to make an acrobatic catch in the first quarter, Jones unintentionally crashed into the back of the security guard's legs. The result was a nasty tumble and prolonged wait while medical officials gave assistance to the guard.
After a few minutes, the guard was back on his feet and the game resumed.
The replays showed that the guard did not strike his head on the Georgia Dome turf, instead falling directly on his back.
The incident brought up reminders of Gil Haskell, a former assistant coach for the Green Bay Packers who was wiped out on the Dallas sidelines in 1996 and suffered severe head injuries. According to Sports Illustrated, Haskell made a full recovery from a skull fracture and bruising of the brain.
Hopefully, the guard in Atlanta only had the wind knocked out of him. Any potentially severe injuries appear to have been avoided.
