The Rock is set to challenge CM Punk for the WWE title at the Royal Rumble, and many are all but assuming Rocky will win the belt cleanly.
WWE has put a lot of effort into getting The Rock to wrestle some matches, and having him win the title certainly makes sense from a business standpoint.
It would bring back a lot of people who may have stopped watching over the years to see what Rock is like as champion, and it would let WWE use his image and name for a few months leading into WrestleMania.
However, WWE might want to keep people on their toes and have Rocky come away empty-handed.
Before we review the possible scenario where this could happen, let's recap the history between The Rock and John Cena.
The Rock cost John Cena the WWE title during his no-DQ match with Miz at WrestleMania 27. The following year Rocky defeated Cena in a one-on-one match at WrestleMania 28.
This would not even mean John Cena has to turn heel, although many would like that to happen. This could simply be made to be Cena getting revenge on Rocky for what he did to Cena in previous years.
While many fans might boo Cena for this kind of thing, it is something he is used to. He can cut one promo on Raw about how he values his true fans and this was him just trying to get even and all will be forgiven.
If Cena were to come down and cost Rock the title, it would also set up Rocky to win the title during the Elimination Chamber, which he is already advertised for, and go on to WrestleMania to defend against Cena.
This scenario works for a few reasons.
WWE gets to capitalize of Rocky possibly winning the title at two different events instead of just one, which might make the difference for people who are on the fence about buying all three PPV events to decide to buy the Elimination Chamber PPV instead of skipping it.
If fans see Rocky win the title at The Rumble, they will probably assume he will keep it at EC and defend against someone at WrestleMania, but if he loses at The Rumble, people will want to see him win the title at EC, thus increasing sales.
Another reason this scenario works is that it would give Cena back some of the edge he has lost in recent years. If he costs Rocky the WWE title then he will look like someone with a personal agenda instead of a corporate mascot.
One of the things that has caused some fans to turn against Cena is his constant good-guy image. Attacking Rocky without cause would help reverse that perception, at least a little bit.
Cena costing Rock the title would also give them a much better storyline excuse to be paired up at WrestleMania for another match.
We also can't forget that if this happened, CM Punk would extend his already lengthy title reign another month, which would not be a bad thing considering he will be at every event between the Rumble and Chamber, unlike Rocky who will probably deliver a few messages via satellite.
When it comes right down to it, this scenario benefits WWE in many ways and hurts them in almost no way at all.
This is an unlikely scenario, but it is one that would certainly shake things up in WWE.
