Fourth-seeded David Ferrer earned a 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 16 Kei Nishikori of Japan in the first men's match of the Australian Open on Sunday to reach the quarterfinals, where he could meet fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro.
