Considering that the last time the Washington Capitals played, it was with a brand of risk-averse hockey that occasionally resembled a sleep aid on ice, Saturday night’s season opener served as culture shock. Instead of hunkering down in their zone, the Capitals flowed freely up ice, searching for chances to flash their offensive creativity and dictate the pace of the contest. For all the goals and opportunities, though, there were just as many odd-man rushes and defensive missteps that made it clear Washington remained a team finding its way with a new system and a new coach.
