Surprise entrants in the Royal Rumble are always fun to see, but the times those superstars have won the match have been even more shocking.
In the past, top superstars have returned to WWE at the Royal Rumble only to end up winning the match as well. In 2008, John Cena made an unexpected early return from injury and was the final entrant at number 30. He would go on to win the Rumble as the last entrant for the second year in a row.
Two years later, Edge made a similar return from injury as the 29th entrant and last eliminated John Cena to win the Rumble.
This brings us to the question – could a surprise entrant win the Rumble again?
Let’s take a look at some possible surprise entrants who could win the Royal Rumble this year.
Brock Lesnar is a former Royal Rumble winner, having won the match in 2003, but has not been seen on WWE TV in months.
His return could come at any time as he is expected to have a big match at WrestleMania. However, according to WrestlingInc.com, Lesnar may not return to WWE programming until February or March.
Thus, Lesnar as both a surprise entrant and winner of the Royal Rumble this year is highly unlikely.
The Rock or CM Punk
One possible scenario this year depends on the order of matches at the Royal Rumble. I recently wrote an article discussing whether the WWE Championship or Royal Rumble match should end the show. If it is the latter, then perhaps the loser of the WWE title match could enter the Rumble.
Imagine if the Rock loses to CM Punk or for whatever reason is unable to win the WWE title and enters the Rumble. One favorite to win this year is John Cena. How interesting would it be if the Rock and John Cena were the final two men standing in the ring at the end of the Rumble match?
It would also be exciting to see CM Punk and John Cena or CM Punk and Ryback as the final two in the match.
Another superstar, like Lesnar, we haven’t seen on WWE TV in a long time is the Undertaker.
The phenom of the WWE will hopefully have another match at WrestleMania and surprising us as an entrant in the Rumble match is a possibility.
The Undertaker made history in 2007 when he was the first person to enter the rumble at number 30 and win it.
Could he be the next superstar to return and win it?
In any case, if the Undertaker does become the next surprise entrant to win the rumble, and CM Punk retains his title, their match at WrestleMania 29 would be set up quite easily.
While there are plenty of current superstars who have a strong possibility of winning, such as John Cena or Ryback, surprise entrants should still be considered in the running.
What do you think? Could a surprise entrant win the Rumble match this year? Why or why not? Please leave your comments, suggestions and thoughts in the section below.
