Keys to the Game
3. Indy Defense Stuns the Elite—Again
If this game proved anything, it is that the Indiana Pacers can defend and dominate any opponent.
Entering the game, the Houston Rockets ranked second in the NBA in scoring offense at 105.4 points per game. Against the Pacers, Houston managed to score just 95 points.
Just the second time since December 29, 2012 that Houston has been held under 100 points.
As for Indiana, this is a growing trend. They've held the Miami Heat and new York Knicks below 80 points during the month of January.
Just another day as the NBA's top ranked scoring defense.
2. All About Harden
If the Houston Rockets plans on winning games, they better find a way to overcome poor performances by James Harden. As it preesntly stands, they are performing at a disturbingly low level when he struggles.
Tonight was no different.
Harden finished with 17 points, seven assists, five rebounds, four blocks and a steal. He also shot just 5-of-19 from the floor and committed five turnovers.
Even superb outings from Omer Asik and Carlos Delfino couldn't overcome that.
If the Rockets are to succeed in future outings, they'll need to create a system in which Harden's struggles can be compensated for. The most likely way they'll be able to achieve such is by trusting Jeremy Lin with the ball.
Lin didn't play very well, either, but he certainly outperformed his backcourt counterpart. Discovering balance will lead to W's.
Should Houston avoid that need, however, the results will continue to disappoint.
1. The West-George Connection
Paul George will garner the headlines for his 31 point performance and rightfully so. After all, he did drain seven three-point field goals.
The fact of the matter is, George scored 18 of those 31 points in the first quarter. He had some major help in the form of David West.
Some major help.
West finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, three blocks and a steal. Between he and George, the Pacers appear to have found the cure to their offensive woes.
If not, this evening was one heck of a treat for Pacers fans.

As for the Houston Rockets, it just wasn't there for them.
Indiana's defense smothered them for 48 minutes, thus holding Houston to 41.0 percent shooting from the floor. James Harden finished with 17 points, but he also shot just 5-of-19 from the floor.
Carlos Delfino's fourth quarter heroics simply weren't enough in the end. Indiana secured this victory with a brilliant two-way performance.
