Wide receiver Devin Thomas is coming out of retirement to join the Detroit Lions.

According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Michigan native signed with the Lions Thursday and will compete for a position on special teams and possibly as a backup receiver.

The 26-year-old receiver was born in Ann Arbor and spent two years playing for the Michigan State Spartans. Thomas had an impressive junior year in 2007, finishing with 79 receptions for 1,260 yards and eight touchdowns.

Thomas declared himself eligible for the 2008 NFL draft and was selected in the second round, 34th overall, by the Washington Redskins.

Thomas spent just over two seasons with the Redskins, before making a brief stop with the Carolina Panthers. He then suited up for the New York Giants, helping them win Super Bowl XLVI over the New England Patriots.

The most noteworthy moments of his career came in the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers. Thomas made two key fumble recoveries, the second of which led to a Lawrence Tynes game-winning field goal in overtime.

Thomas signed on with the Chicago Bears prior to his season, but retired during training camp in August.

Thomas has had little impact as a receiver over the course of his career, catching just 43 passes for 484 yards and three touchdowns in 55 career games. With that said, Thomas isn't likely to spend much time playing alongside Calvin Johnson or Ryan Broyles.

However, with Stefan Logan set to become a free agent, perhaps Thomas will be given an opportunity on special teams as a kick returner. Thomas has returned 60 kickoffs, averaging 24.1 yards and no touchdowns. Logan was removed from his return duties in Week 17, after making two costly errors in Week 16 against the Atlanta Falcons
