Reality didn’t seem to sink in for Matt Harrison until after Thursday’s news conference at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

The left-handed pitcher had known for days that he was on the verge of signing a five-year extension with the Rangers worth $55 million, plus a club-controlled option year that could be worth as much as $15.75 million.

Those are staggering numbers for a 27-year-old from Creedmoor, N.C. It’s a town of 4,000 now, but when Harrison was a kid it had 200 people, one flashing light, a liquor store and a post office...
