The NBA trading deadline is just five weeks away, and it’s no surprise that the buzz surrounding one of the hottest names rumored to be available—Rudy Gay of the Memphis Grizzlies—is heating up substantially.

Considering the swingman is just 26-years-old and just as productive as he has ever been during his six-year career, it’s no surprise that a number of GMs have thrown their hat into the ring and are interested in acquiring his services.

Let’s take a look at the latest offers and other rumblings concerning Gay in today’s rumor roundup.

Washington Wizards Make Offer

The Grizzlies ownership—led by CEO Jason Levien—reportedly finished talking recently to every single team in the NBA about their roster and potential transactions, which is why so much has been leaking out about Gay in the past few weeks.

However, the Wizards’ package—headlined by rookie guard Bradley Beal, the No. 3 overall pick—is the only one currently known to have been mulled over by team brass.

As per Ronald Tillery of The Commercial Appeal:

The Griz have entertained the Washington Wizards' offer for Gay. The crux of that exchange would have the Griz receiving rookie shooting guard Bradley Beal in a larger package.

It’s certainly not a terrible offer, but the salaries do not come close to matching up (Beal is making $4.13 million this season, Gay is earning approximately $16.5 million), and the packaged players and picks are likely what will keep this deal from being completed.

Toronto Raptors Pull Out

It seems that most teams are ramping up their pursuit of Gay, but the Raptors are reportedly bowing out due to his prohibitive cost.

Doug Smith of The Toronto Star wrote on Monday:

According to a highly-placed source, any chance of the Raptors picking up Rudy Gay in a trade are diminishing rapidly and it’s less and less likely something will happen.

The reason?

The asking price is far too high.

Smith found that the Griz are interested in Jose Calderon’s expiring contract, Terrence Ross and one of the plethora of young big men on the Toronto roster.

While Gay is certainly a great player, he’s not a franchise piece that would suddenly make the Raptors title contenders. For this reason alone, he’s not worth giving up an arm and a leg via trade.

It’ll be interesting to see if Memphis’ price comes down or goes up with the deadline looming closer.

Zach Randolph Also on Block

It seems that Gay might not be the only Grizzly on the market at this juncture.

According to Mitch Lawrence of the New York Daily News, Levien is open to moving both Gay and Randolph, “for the right price.”

Both have been absolutely instrumental to the Grizzlies postseason runs over the past few years, but they could be moved to cut costs and bring in younger, cheaper pieces or draft picks.

While all the chatter lately has been about Gay, it wouldn’t be that surprising to see Z-Bo on the move at the deadline.
