Mucho Macho Man will try to repeat his impressive win in the Sunshine Millions Classic last year.

The Breeders' Cup is the preeminent event in American thoroughbred horse racing, but the Florida-bred horses have their own premier local event in January with the Sunshine Millions Day.

The series was created in 2003 by Frank Stronach, prominent Austrian-Canandian thoroughbred owner/breeder and owner of Magna Entertainment (now MI Developments), the corporation that owns Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park.

The first nine editions of the Sunshine Millions Day showcased horses bred in Florida and California, with the six races divided evenly between Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita.

The series originally comprised eight races. The Oaks and Dash, both at six furlongs and restricted to three-year-olds, were dropped from the Sunshine Millions day card in 2010.

The purses for the remaining six races were also cut that year.

It received network television coverage for all of its early history, but NBC stopped covering the event after the 2007 edition. ESPN2 televised the Millions card in 2008, but unfortunately it has not been on network television since.

It will be the eleventh edition but it will be the second year that is run exclusively for Florida-bred horses. It's also the second consecutive year that Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, FL is the exclusive host.

In November of 2011 it was announced that beginning in 2012, all of the races would take place exclusively at Gulfstream Park.

This Saturday, January 19th, 2013,  the attention of the American thoroughbred racing world will turn to Gulfstream Park. It will not only host the 2013 Eclipse Awards on Saturday evening, but during the daylight hours the Sunshine Millions will be run.

It will be a Super-Saturday indeed, with combined purses of $1.3 million.

Although not consider to be graded stakes events by the requisite committee, the six-pack of races are stacked with high quality fields.

Even without their Californian counterparts for the second consecutive year, all six races promise to deliver an action-packed series with no shortage of drama in them.

The card is headlined by the Classic. Defending champion and recent second-place finisher in the Breeders' Cup Classic, Mucho Macho Man, will give the rematch to Ron the Greek and will be joined by Fort Loudon and Cash Rules.
