SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The most emblematic sequence was one of the last, with just about all hope squeezed out of Saturday for Notre Dame. The steel-trap, tennis-racket palms of Jack Cooley grabbed a rebound, and a Connecticut player somehow jarred it loose, and seconds later the ball went through the rim to turn all optimism to dust. "It never felt good in there," Irish coach Mike Brey said. "The vibe was different than other nights. It was going to have to be a flat-out theft."
