Fernando Torres could be offered a surprise escape route out of his Chelsea hell with former club Atletico Madrid said to be preparing a move.

The £50 million British record signing has struggled to find any form during a feeble two-year spell at Stamford Bridge, and the Europa League champions are hoping to seal a cut price deal for the Spaniard during the January transfer window (via The Metro).

It is widely expected that Torres will depart Chelsea in the summer, but with the ailing striker short of confidence and support from the stands, Los Rojiblancos are hoping to tempt Chelsea to cut their losses immediately.

Selling Torres now would leave Chelsea needing to recruit another forward before the end of the month, and with Atletico struggling financially, it is unlikely they would be able to fund a straight transfer.

However, Chelsea may be willing to negotiate as it would leave them in pole position to acquire Radamel Falcao, and the Blues are almost certain to insist any deal involves the Colombian.

There appears no way back for Torres at Chelsea after an underwhelming stint, and his eventual exit could come sooner than first thought if Atletico's interest is genuine.
