The Longest Mock Draft in NFL History Continues...
I would have gotten this out quicker, but I had to rush to my car as I avoided sniper fire after finishing the Jaguars column.
But don’t worry, I’ve been married to my wife for almost five years—that means she has the experience necessary to lead this Mock Draft to its completion should one of those dangerous sniper bullets find its mark.
Hey, if politicians are going to get involved with professional sports, unprofessional sports writers should get involved in politics. Or at least making fun of politics.
Seriously, did Hillary forget that there were about 200 reporters with cameras and video recorders?
Or is she completely delusional?
Pick No. 27: San Diego Chargers
I didn’t believe this as the time, but I’ve since come to the conclusion that when the San Diego Chargers arrived in Indianapolis for their second round playoff game they were the best team in the NFL.
Had they not suffered a rash of ridiculous injuries to their three most important offensive players, they would have won the Super Bowl.
That’s right—Norv Turner would have won a Super Bowl.
We said in the beginning of the season, the Chargers had talent. A ton of talent. They were just saddled by a bad head coach.
If that bad head coach could ever figure out how to get out of the talent’s way, they could surprise people.
Well, either Norv got out of the way or the talent figured it out, because the Chargers were the best team in the NFL going into the playoffs.
If they get healthy, they’ll be back next season.
Norv Turner might be a bad head coach, but his team is LOADED. And LT can make ANY coach look good.
At least, when he’s not sulking on the bench.
The Chargers do have one position where they’re not loaded. I believe Jeromey Clary is penciled in as the starting right tackle for next season.
If your initial reaction is, “Who the hell is Jeromey Clary?” then you understand the predicament the San Diego Chargers are in.
They could also use a replacement for Michael Turner, but you don’t draft a backup runningback in the first round when you’re this close to the top of the NFL mountain. I’d expect them to look at someone in the later rounds to spell LT and keep him fresh during the long NFL season.
So, back to this Jeromey Clary issue…
The Pick: Jeff Otah, OT, Pittsburgh
He’s 6’6, 322 pounds of huge, run-blocking, pass-blocking, devastating power.
And to be fair, he probably isn’t going to be around at this point in the draft (see my Jaguars pick for an explanation of my draft board).
But if by some miracle he’s still on the board, the Chargers will happily snatch him up.
Other, perhaps more realistic options at this pick would be Gosder Cherilus out of Boston College or Sam Baker out of USC.
In any event, the Chargers will be looking for offensive line help, and they’re likely to find it with the 27th pick of the 2008 NFL draft.
