Early in the first half of Wednesday’s Illinois-Minnesota game, Brandon Paul brought back his school’s old “Flyin’ Illini” nickname from the late 1980s in a big way. Primarily a three-point shooter, Paul opted in this instance to take the ball to the tin. And he did so with authority, throwing down a posterizing jam over the Gophers’ Trevor Mbakwe. Oddly enough, Paul was called for a charge on the play yet his dunk still counted. Perhaps the officials were just that impressed. Unfortunately, Illinois couldn’t generate any momentum from Paul’s jam. Minnesota held the Illini to just 35.4% shooting in an 84–67 win, with Mbakwe rebounding from his posterization to record a 19-point, 11-rebound effort.
