AJ McCarron's Mom, Dee Dee Bonner, Overshadowed by Son's Girlfriend at BCS Game
On the way into Monday's BCS game, we were certain the biggest stars would include AJ McCarron's mom as well as girlfriend. Instead, the QB's boo, Katherine Webb, stole every last bit of the spotlight.
As we wrote on Monday, the McCarron clan was heading into the BCS game with a tremendous spotlight already on them.
AJ McCarron was the marquee quarterback tasked with leading his team on the field, his girlfriend was growing in popularity and his mother, DeeDee Bonner, was doing pre-game interviews and enjoying budding fame.
By the end of a huge Alabama victory over Notre Dame, McCarron's girlfriend was all anyone wanted to talk about.
In fact, the hype was so immense it resulted in what we assume was a slap on the wrist for Brent Musburger.
The ESPN sportscaster made a now famous call of Webb and Bonner who were watching from the sidelines. You will hear him gush over Webb and then throw in Bonner as a mere after thought.
Musburger has received a great deal of vitriol by going mad over the lovely girlfriend of AJ McCarron. Which is odd, because there was hardly a football game going on at the time.
Sports Business Journal's John Ourand reported ESPN's statement on Brent and his thoughts on the sideline hottie.
Full statement from ESPN on Brent Musburger's comments during the BCS telecast: “We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test. However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that.”
A stern talking to and a blaze of tweets later, Katherine Webb is as big a star as any Alabama football player, a sign of the world in which we live.
Yahoo! Sports managed to get some thoughts from Webb who is an Auburn grad and former Miss Alabama.
My phone is dead. My followers went from 2,300 this morning to 96,000 by the end of the night. I don't know if I should even check now, I don't know what is going on.
Not that any of this matters, because the woman who was giving interviews before the game is still the mother of a BCS Champion who happens to be dating America's sweetheart at the moment.
