The Sports Business Journal's John Ourand passed along a statement from ESPN, wherein the Worldwide Leader apologizes for Mr. Musburger:

We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test. However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that.

I wonder how long it took Musburger to understand this after uttering his controversial comments.

Just when the BCS National Championship Game was nearing unwatchable status, the legendary sportscaster saved the show in unforgettable fashion. As Alabama led Notre Dame 14-0 with 4:22 left in the first quarter, the ESPN cameras found Katherine Webb, AJ McCarron's girlfriend and Miss Alabama USA 2012.

Musburger, 73, didn't waste his opportunity to shine. He shamelessly gushed over the 23-year-old Webb, spittin' some grown-man game that all you youngsters can learn from.

Naturally, Musburger's awesomely creepy comments took the Twitterverse by storm. But while his verbal drooling stole the spotlight, let's not forget that Musburger has a history of this sort of thing.

Just seven years ago, Musburger made the following statement upon seeing Florida State student Jenn Sterger (of Brett Favre sexting fame).

This man is a serial gawker, and I absolutely love him for it.

However, as impossible as it seemed at the time, Musburger's panting wasn't the best instance of guys trying to hit on Webb. Darnell Dockett of the Arizona Cardinals took home that honor after accidentally tweeting his phone number and lame pickup line to the world:
